I’d like to get an associates degree in computer science, I find the field interesting…I live in the phoenix metropolitan area and my friend told me that there would be no way I could find a job when I graduate, as all the tech jobs are taken. Is this true, or do I still have a chance? I’m not just going for a tech certificate or anything, I’m going to a community college. What kinds of jobs can I get?

Not much. Nobody is going to hire an A.S. when they can get a B.S. for the same money.
Do yourself a favor: Go for certification instead of an A.S.; an A.S. is worthless in the info tech market, but a certification will get you a REAL job.
I Completed an A.A.S. in Computer Information Systems back in 2000 and at least in the houston area have never had an issue finding a Job through two scary economic turn downs. It will be hard to find entry level work as a programmer with an associates, but if you chose the hardware path, you will easily find a 35-40K entry level help desk job and can move on from there to desktop support, then maybe security/change management as I have or maybe networking. I would MUCH rather have the 4 year degree, as I am working on completing now. I think you may find after completing an associates, you were capable of getting a bachelors, and feel like you have some unfinished business, but the associates should get you started in the field, no problem. One other important recommendation is to complete certifications(A+, Network+,MOUS) right after you complete the course that pertains to that certification. Some employers don’t care about them but some do and it always looks good on the resume and adds credibility to your education.
