I’d like to know what everyone in the computer science industry is talking about these days. What new technology has all the buzz, or who are the leading companies in the field, etc. I’m really just looking for some topics that are “hot” in the industry and are or will be influential to the future of computer science. Thanks.
Thanks for the replies so far, they’re great! Also, I’d like to add that if anybody is actually in the comp sci field, I’d like to hear what you do and what your business’s future is.

Development un the field of software designing.
Here’s a couple of the hot topics in software development that you might be interested in.
Developing software for mobile platforms is growing. Google’s Android project is an example of this kind of work. I’ve attached a link below that will give you the details, or just google it.
Multi-core programming will probably get more popular, since the number of cores in an average computer today is 2 (compared to 1 a few years ago) and it’s only going to increase. This means that languages that exploit multiple cores will probably be used more. An example of a language like this is Erlang. I’ve attached a link to a book description about Erlang.
A good way to find some of the hot topics is to check out the websites of programming text book publishers. I recommend checking out O’Reilly or the Pragmatic Programmers and looking at their New or Upcoming releases. This will give you a good idea of what technologies and programming languages are becoming popular.
Also, check out job descriptions of jobs in fields you would be interested in. They usually list all the languages and skills they want you to have.
Hope that helps.
I often read Computerworld to find out what’s hot.
Here’s who they think are the Best Places to Work in IT in 2007:

They just wrote about what they think will happen in the IT field through 2010: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleTOC&specialReportId=9000100&articleId=112367&intsrc=kc_spec
They think IT departments will be populated with “versatilists” — those with a technology background who also know the business sector inside and out, can architect and carry out IT plans that will add business value, and can cultivate relationships both inside and outside the company.
Top needs they see: Project management and application development skills — “whether for service providers, software developers or IT organizations — are characteristics that will be absolute” in 2010.
Good luck!
