I have a MIS and can’t get a job because I don’t know IT and you need to know that too. I personally think it’s a ripoff, just go for the IT. You need to know about building databases, how to set up web pages, about security and project management are just a few of the classes I took. I don’t think the job market is good for MIS but seems to be better for IT people. Wish I had know this before I wasted my time, I would have done something else. Now I just have a worthless degree.

The problem with MIS is that it is a management oriented degree. The reason colleges like offering MIS is that because it is general and about management principles it never is obsoleted by technology changing. In the Bachelors program I graduated from we had courses in Windows Server 3.0, 3.1 and 4.0 before we got out of the class. The specifics were changing so fast that they could barely decide on what book to use to teach the courses before it was obsolete.

Most managers that are around in IT are past in the trenches systems engineers or others that have stayed around the field long enough to arrive at those positions via promotion. Give them a few project planning courses and some change management courses and bang they are effective managers.

So I would say it is better to go for Computer Science or Computer Information Systems or another emphasis along those lines.
