I know there are many fields in the area of computer science like software engineers, information technology, information systems, computer engineers, and many others.
But, what would be the basic computer languages I’ll need to know as a starter? What things should I know before taking a computer programming class? C++? Java? Unix? Why are they important?
What is the field in which most computer scientists study? Why? Please let me know about everything.

You don’t need to learn any programming languages…You could start with visual basic then move on to something like java, just to make it easier for you the first and second semesters.
But you’ll probably end up learning all that again..
Not sure about the statistics part of the question…google that one ?
well i believe that it doesn’t matter what languages u know its how u use them. if you can program with VB6.0 great , if u can program with C or C++ good for you but if you don’t know how to figure out programing problems you will always be a bad programmer. you can always learn programing languages but figuring out problems and thinking like a GOOD programmer i think is the hardest part. just like a good painter doesn’t need good brushes to make good art a good programmer doesn’t need a “good” language to be a good programmer. but don’t get me wrong some languages are better for certain things are some aren’t. and one more thing if you enjoy programing you will do a good job.
i studied computer science and only achieved 48 credits… they will make u work on C++ not java yet…i recommend you study C++ way before you take a course or you might end up being real confuses like i was. if ur an absolute beginner i suggest you learn python and a lil bit and move up to C++ to understand whats going on. python is noobie friendly and you’ll understand the concept better. i suggest you get the book how to think like a computer scientist in python…download it off isohunt.com heres a mock up of the book

you’ll also learn assembly language and alot of other small languages the best bet it so learn an easy one first and then move up…taste python a bit and then go do a bunch of tutorials on c++
