I’m a senior in high school applying to a bunch of colleges right now. Does RIT’s computer science curriculum have a good reputation?
I’m from southern california, but I really want to experience somewhere different for my college experience. Would I be able to handle living in Rochester? I really like the snow, so cold weather doesn’t really bother me, but is it a relatively safe place to live in? Is there a lot to do for someone on a college income and living over 2,000 miles away from their parents?

I can’t answer whether or not Rochester has a lot for someone to do, since I’ve never personally been to that part of New York.
However, I believe it has a very good reputation. The valedictorian from our prep school here last year went to that school, so I’m guessing it would have to be pretty prestigious.
RIT has a very competitive Computer Science program. One of the greatest benefits of attending RIT is the mandatory co-op program, which allows students to get real work experience before graduating. This real work experience is RIT’s biggest plus.
The college campus and surrounding suburbs are a very safe place to live. There are certain sections of the city you would want to avoid, but I imagine every city is like that. The RIT campus is in a very nice suburb.
Moving to RIT from SoCal is not a decision I would make, but if you think you’ll enjoy the weather, I wish you the best of luck.
