You can learn on your own, but you don’t really get the hands-on training that really helps a lot when you do it alone.

yes its difficult because its a vast subject and learning something by urself means you get no degrees so u are not officially recognised as an expert. although u can learn some languages by urself

Computer Science is more Theory than Practice. With Computer Science its closer to Computer Engineering, Scientists develop standards for the Computer Community. Its not hard to learn stuff on your own and who know you may be even to make something with what you know. But if youre wanting to develop software then anyone can learn a programming language and put it into practice and develop software.

You would be likely to get a job as a self taught programmers then you would a self taught computer scientist.

I would recommend getting an entry level job in the backroom operations of a company, like a financial institution. Let them know that you’re taking up computer science and would like to be an apprentice and observe some of the things they are doing. You could even offer to take a pay cut for this access. At the same time, be studying on your own. On the job training is the only close substitute for technical school or college. You need instruction from a teacher or an expert in the field. Also, Computer Science is a vast field. I would narrow your interest to one or two aspects of it such as Computer Repair, Networking, Programming, etc.

Yes, learning computer science by yourself is a very challenging task, hence that is why it usually takes a 4 year degree at most colleges. However, learning computer programming is not all that difficult with a little bit of dedication.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia on computer science – “Computer science (or computing science) is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation, and of practical techniques for their implementation and application in computer systems.”

In simpler speech, I would define computer science as the study of the methods computers use to solve problems (this includes both software and hardware). There are many aspects to this which, unfortunately, are not explained well enough on the Web.

If learning how to program is what you want, though, then decide on a programming language and find a tutorial online.
