Thousands of people do just that. I have served 22 years so far. In that time I have earned an AAS, BS, MA and MS all paid for by Uncle Sam. The only time I went to school full time was my last two year of my BS.

From what I hear you have to be very determined to complete coursework while serving active duty in the Navy due to the fact that you will basically be holding the responsibility of a working adult. You could probably squeeze in one or two classes a semester, three semesters a year- if you are very determined and find a Rate that will not require you to go underway in smaller vessels, most of the larger ships, such as carriers, now have computer labs and internet access.

It’s doable. Just make sure the university you want to attend offers online courses. I got a bachelor degree in three years taking night classes. It was long hours but definitely doable and was even able to maintain a 3.875 GPA.

Talk with the college advisors about this, as well as with whoever the navy’s counterpart may be. It might be possible the navy would pay for this while you’re in, but certainly, you can do it if you really want it.

You are limited with the Navy and college. You cannot use Tuition Assistance until you have been at your command 1 year, then it is limited to $4500 or 16 college credits per year. You can maybe take one class at a time, do CLEP & DANTES to get some other credit as well. If you need lab work it will be difficult unless you are on Shore Duty.

I got 2 degrees (B.S. in Accounting & Finance) while on AD, but mostly while I was on Shore Duty. It also helped that I went to a college with a Quarter System my last couple of years, since I could take up to 15 -16 classes/ year.

It will be difficult and it will be time consuming; but it is possible, if you manage your time wisely (and hope & pray that you have supportive superiors). Don’t forget that your duties in the Navy comes first; otherwise, your LPO, LCPO, DIVO, OIC, CMC, CO can take that privilege away very quickly.

The solo motto of online courses is to help people working or who can’t devote time on regular classes but need to increase their education qualification to get better jobs, to increase their salaries or to get better designation etc. SO its best suited for people like you to get an online degree.
