My undergraduate degree is in Computer Science, I have been interested in bioinformatics for a number of years now and would like to do things (maybe work in open source projects, or even work for a company) that would help prepare me and make me more competitive to apply to a Phd program in bioinformatics. The few universities I have spoken to are surprisingly glib and do not provide much information on how to “prep” myself. I read a few online journals to keep up with news and such. Any other suggestions?
Have you tried talking to anyone who is in the PhD program or who has a PhD and is working in the field? Some universities list their PhD candidates on the department website. However, you can also call the department and tell them that you’re considering their program and would like to talk to current students in it. Keeping up with the recent scholarship is a good idea, both because it will help you be admitted but also because it will help you determine who you want to work with and thus which programs you will consider applying to. If someone is doing something that you find particularly interesting, contact them and ask some of your questions. Also, look around for a listserv that pertains to that field. If there’s a professional society it may be connected to that. Good Luck!
