I currently have a four year degree in Business Administration – Leadership degree, from a business specialized school and am currently in school, working on a computer science degree.
I am starting to have second thoughts about my degree choice, because I really don’t want to be someone who is stuck in a cubicle all day writing mindless code. Please don’t read me wrong though, I do love learning how to code and learning how programs are made. I was trying to think if a MIS degree would maybe be a more viable option for me right now, with already having a 4 year business degree, I would think that would take care of alot of business classes I would be required to take in the MIS program.
However, I was also thinking because I already have a 4 year degree that specializes in pretty much business Mangement and leadership, would it be smarter for me to stick it out in the the CS program and finish that degree.
The question is I guess, what if I wanted a job that is usually considered a job for a MIS graduate? Would the fact I have a 4 year degree in Business Administration- Leadership and a 4 year degree in Computer Science, make me a more intriguing canidate then someone with just a MIS degree? Would this scare job opportunities away from me, because people would think I am over educated for a MIS job? Should I just get a MIS degree and continue learning programming in depth on my own time? Any insight would be wonderful!
A CS degree would not scare me away from you but your resume had better reflect your business degree over the coding.
Remember and MIS degree is really a business degree only with computer systems at its core. My concern for you is that you are taking a degree you don’t enjoy. If MIS is really where your heart lies then you might want to switch.
If, on the other hand, your desire is to have an in depth knowledge of the systems you will be analyzing then stick with the CS. Just make sure you are learning some decent languages.
I would also do whatever I could to work part time or co-op in a company before you graduate as any work in the corporate world will help beef your resume up immensely.
