Here is my situation. I am entering my junior year in college this fall/2009 and I really want to change my major to computer science. I have been going under communication, but I realize that this isn’t for me and that my love is in computer science. I don’t have too many prerequisites for the computer science major.
I want to ask if it’s too late to change majors. I’m pursing the degree at UNC, and some of the courses are extremely tough (calc 2 and physics). Also, I was wondering if there was any alternative like taking compter science courses, graduate with a commiunicaton degree, then re-enter to try to graduate with a computer science degree?
One thing that is positive is that I could possibly get more time by entering in a 5th year (I am athlete here on full scholarship). I am also willing to spend the time and money to try to graduate with this degree even after my time is up.
I feel extremely passionate about computer science, it’s the only thing I can see myself doing in the future, and I’m willing to dedicate everything in order to pass graduate with this degree.
It is never too late to change majors! You said that you are willing to spend time, bravo, that is all that it is. It will take a little more time, but you are still just fine, go for it!
It all depends on what kind of work you want to do with computers. If you want to do serious programming or software engineer type work, you will need the college degree. If you are looking more to be a systems administrator or network administrator, you don’t need a degree at all. My brother took some computer courses and then the certification tests for Network+, MCSE, and something else. He has moved up to a systems administrator in just a few short years earning good money and benefits.
If you aren’t going to be happy in communications, don’t do it. An extra year or two of college is worth the price of a better lifelong career. I’m a junior and 36 yrs old and I just changed my major.
