Hello, Yahooanswers community!
So I’m 14, and for my Freshman Focus class we need to think about colleges and what we want to do for a career. I’ve decided that I want to go to University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, but I have a dilemma when it comes to majors and minors. So I’m undecided as to whether I want to be an architect or a biochemist, so I decided to major in both of them, since UW Milwaukee allows double majoring. I also wanted to minor in computer sciences, since it would be useful to both architecture and biochemistry, but I wasn’t sure if you can have two majors AND a minor. I know that it’ll be a lot of extra work, but is it possible for two majors and a minor? Thanks!
Yes you can as long as know you can handle all the class work.
If you truly want to do what you were created to do, I highly recommend reading The Gift In You by Caroline Leaf.
Architecture is usually a five year bachelor’s degree. Biochemistry isn’t going to have much duplication with architecture and is about 2 years of major courses in sequence. A computer science minor is about 18-21 hours or coursework.
Yes, you can double architecture and biochemistry with a minor in computer science. It’ll take you about seven years to complete if you stay on-time and about eight years if you take it average speed. Satisfactory progress rules will wrap your financial aid somewhere around 2/3 of this program plan so you’ll also need to have a significant amount of cash on hand to pay completely for 2 years of this degree. But, it can be done if you want to.
On the other hand, in eight years of schooling you could be an MD or be nearly complete with a PhD. You could have a master’s degree in something or even a JD, DVM, or DDS. Something to think about if you’re going to stay in school 7-8 years anyway.
Hypothetically you could but realistically you would never be able to double major and pass most courses unless you were a super genius that did not sleep. If you were a super genius it would be ridiculous to go to UWM. You would probably be getting a full scholarship to MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech or some other top school. An average student and most honors students would suffer trying to do a double major.
Architecture is a bad career move unless you really have talent and are motivated. Biochemistry is good and would be a worthwhile career but it helps if you know what the career offers and what area you want to specialize in.
If you are serious about a career in anything you really have to pick the right college which would help you with getting placed in that career goal. Different colleges are known for different things. UWM is a good architecture school but I’m not sure if it would be a good choice for undergrad biochemistry.
